CARLSBAD HIGH SCHOOL
ACADEMY PROGRAM
PROGRAM
DESCRIPTION
The staff at Carlsbad High School has
created an innovative method for preparing students for life after high school,
whether they choose career or college.
The Academy program is a two-year experience for juniors and seniors
which focuses on intensified career preparation through specialized classes and
an internship. Qualified students are
accepted into the program at the beginning of their junior year based upon
their academic record, attendance record, and letters of recommendation.
The Academy program is primarily
designed for students who have an interest in a particular field. Depending upon the career choice, students
enroll in specialized courses that focus on a particular academic area after
counseling with an Academy teacher.
Seniors complete a one-to-two semester internship in a career area of
their choice further preparing them for the real world. In their junior year, through their course
work and workshops, students write resumes and cover letters, practice
interviewing skills, and develop problem-solving skills in the workplace.
The culmination of the academy
experience is the senior project, a research project and an oral presentation
before a panel of three individuals from the school and community. The internship and senior project are both
requirements for the student to receive Academy recognition upon graduation.
