GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS

 

The Carlsbad Unified School District Board of Trustees authorizes the granting of a high school diploma to any pupil who has completed all graduation requirements before the date of graduation.  The graduation requirements include:  

 

¨     Course of Study Requirements

All students in grades 9 through 12 shall complete the following course of study totaling 240 semester credits in order to receive a diploma from Carlsbad High School.

 

English

 40 credits

*Mathematics

 30 credits

Science

 20 credits

Health Education

   5 credits

School Success

   5 credits

Social Studies

 30 credits

         World History and Culture &

         United State History, Economics

         and U.S. Government

Physical Education

 20 credits

Fine Arts OR Foreign Language

 10 credits

Electives

 80 credits

 

240 credits

 

Students are required to enroll in 6 classes each semester.  Students will earn 5 credits for each semester of a course in which they earn a passing grade of “D” or better.  Students may repeat a course for a higher grade, but will be given credit only when repeating a failed course. 

 

¨     Grade Point Average

Students are required to have a 1.5 total grade point average on a 4.0 scale (based on an average of all courses where grades are given) in order to receive a diploma from Carlsbad High School. To graduate as an “honor graduate,” a student must have a 3.65 weighted academic grade point average at the end of seven semesters. 

 

¨     California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE)

Starting with the graduating class of 2006, all students must pass the Language Arts/Writing and Mathematics portions of the California High School Exit Exam to earn a high school diploma.  Students take the exit exam for the first time in the spring of their 10th grade year and will have multiple opportunities before their graduation date to earn a passing score on both portions.

 

¨     Community Service Hours

Starting with the graduating class of 2006, all students will need to complete twenty (20) hours of community service to receive their diploma. 

 

 

 

*Starting with the graduating class of 2006, all students will need to complete a math sequence at least through geometry for their 30 credit requirement.
