Internet connections for  student and staff computers

CHS has over 700 Internet connections.  The misuse of high-traffic web sites can easily overload our wiring's capacity.

Most of these entertainment sites attempt to place cookies, cache, pop-ups and spy ware in your hard disk drive

1) The following guidelines are in place to help protect our network against virus attacks, minimize high-volume Internet traffic and keep school related work running smoothly.

Internet should not be used to:

Play on-line music (use the CD player)

Play on-line games

Play on-line videos or watch TV (use the DVD player)

Download music

Download games

Download videos

Chat (including Instant Messenger!)

Please exit the Internet (don’t just minimize it) when not in use

2) The Internet should not be used as a 'reward'.  However, if students use software (and few games) already on the computer it won't affect the school’s Internet traffic.

3) Do not let students download games...they can do that on their home systems (and repair any virus damage) !#@!

4) Review the Technology Use Agreement in the Student Planner.  Every CHS parent signed a similar form during registration.

5) If you or a student try a web site but get a message from St Bernard software, don't be alarmed.  This is the District’s filtering service in action.  It is denying you access to that site.  A general description of why will be displayed.  A record of the “denial” is kept...teachers will be contacted if there are persistent attempts.

Reminders to staff:

Do not install the AOL or Instant Messenger services that start automatically and stay open. It not only slows down your computer system, it also is one of the more commonly used pathways for hackers to get to you.  Instead, just go to www.aol.com where you can log in/log out as needed.

Do not rename computers (if you know how) or change major configurations unless you first consult the site technician.  The computers were named with a specific school-wide plan in mind.

If adding a new computer to your classroom, let the site technician know so that it can be named properly and added to the CHS domain for automatic virus protection and Windows update services.
