Freshman Success Tutorial  (FST)

WHAT IS IT?                          The Freshman Success Tutorial is a mandatory, once-per-week fifteen-minute meeting with each classroom teacher in whose class a student is failing.  During the tutorial a student will work with his/her teachers to create an action plan for improving his/her grades to at least a “C.”  After the action plan is created, the student and teacher will continue to meet weekly in order to monitor the student’s progress on completing the action plan and thereby achieving a passing grade in the class.  A student will remain in the FST unless the next progress report or semester grade shows that he/she has achieved a GPA of at least 2.0 (see below).

WHAT IT’S NOT                   FSTs are not a punishment for poor grades.

HOW IS A STUDENT

PLACED IN THE FST?          If a student has less than a 2.0 academic GPA on any progress or semester report, he/she will be required to attend every scheduled FST for the next grading period.  Additionally, any student who has an F in math or English will also be placed in the FST.  Only official progress/semester grade reports will be used to determine placement or exemption.  Students may be exempted from FST if they make-up an Incomplete and their GPAs are then determined to be at least 2.0.

HOW DOES A

STUDENT EXIT

THE FST PROGRAM?           Once placed in the FST, a student will stay in the program until the next progress report shows that he/she has achieved a GPA of at least 2.0 AND that the student is not failing either math or English.

WHAT IF A STUDENT

SKIPS FST?                            As with any class, students are required to attend FST.  Truant students are subject to the same disciplinary action as for all classes according to CHS’s attendance policy.  Failure to attend more than one required FST meeting will result in the assignment of a Saturday school detention.

WHAT IS THE

FST SCHEDULE?                   A student attends a weekly tutorial for each class he/she is failing.  Tutorial will begin at 11:42 and end at 11:57.  Each class subject meets on a different day according to the following schedule:

                                                ENGLISH                                            MONDAY

                                                MATH                                                 TUESDAY

                                                HEALTH/SCHOOL SUCCESS          WEDNESDAY

                                                SCIENCE                                            THURSDAY*

                                                WORLD LANGUAGES                     FRIDAY*

*NOTE:  A student in the science and/or world languages tutorials will not necessarily meet with his/her own teacher, but may be assigned to a designated and qualified tutor from the science/world languages department

WHAT WILL

STUDENTS DO

DURING FSTs?                      In consultation with his/her teachers, a student will create and monitor an action plan for success in each failed class.  The student is expected to fulfill all obligations detailed in thea action plan.  Once the action plans has been created, teachers will:

·        Monitor each student’s Action Plan

·        Encourage and help students to set achievable goals for bringing their grades up to at least a 2.0 GPA

·        Make connections with students as just one more of many supportive adults

WHO WILL BE

MY STUDENT’S

TUTORS?                               Except as noted above, students will attend the FST with

his/her own classroom teachers in each subject area.

WHEN WILL MY

STUDENT EAT

LUNCH?                                 A student who participates in the Freshman Success Tutorial will still have 35 minutes to eat lunch and get to his/her next class at 12:32.  It is therefore recommended that a student bring his/her own lunch on those days which he/she is scheduled to attend tutorial.
