CONGRATULATIONS TO CHS SOPHOMORE JJ WERTZ who earned a debate spot at the State Championship Tournament this coming April.  Good luck to the rest of the Speech and Debate team as they continue with other State Qualifying competitions over the next two weekends.

ADVANCED PLACEMENT SIGN UPS – THE COST INCREASES AFTER TOMORROW:

AP tests can be ordered for $85 through Friday, February 29th.  After this date, the cost per test is $105.  Order forms are available in Mrs. De Luca’s office, Study Room 3 in the library.  Financial aid is available for students on the Free and Reduced Lunch Program.  Students can bring their registration form and money to Mrs. De Luca before school, during lunch and after school.  For more information, contact Mrs. De Luca at 331-5168.

COLLEGE COST-CUTTING STRATEGIES SEMINAR:

There will be a college cost-cutting strategies seminar on Wednesday, March 5th from 6:00 – 8:00pm in Bressi Ranch at 2551 Muirfields Dr., CarlsbadRSVP by March 3rd to 760-931-1889.  All parents are invited.

 

MIRA COSTA COMMUNITY COLLEGE VISIT FOR INTERESTED SENIORS:

Mira Costa C.C. is inviting interested seniors to tour their Oceanside campus on March 14th.  Lunch and bus transportation to and from CHS will be provided.  All students must ride the bus to take part in this special event.  Seating is limited so sign up early in the Guidance Department.  Students need to sign up to take the placement test and can apply online at www.miracosta.edu.  Click on the SURF icon, and then click on the words: apply online.  Print out the confirmation page and bring it with you on the day you come, along with a picture ID and your social security number.

 

CRIME SCENE INVESTIGATOR VISITING CHS:

Christine Duran, former CHS graduate, will be in the Guidance Department on Friday, March 7th at 10:30am to speak with students in a small group setting about her career as a Crime Scene Investigator.  She will debunk the TV myths, discuss the realities of her career, and share the educational requirements and personality traits necessary for this type of forensic work.  Students need to sign up with Mr. Ashton.  Just ask for the clipboard.

 

FOUR SEASONS CHEF VISITING CHS:

Zach Lennox, Executive Chef at the Four Seasons Resort of Carlsbad will be in the Guidance Department on Tuesday, March 18th at 10:30am to speak with students regarding the occupation of Professional Chef.  Career paths in the culinary arts will be discussed, as well as the education requirements, special aptitudes, cooking schools, and skills necessary for success in this field.  Students need to sign up with Mr. Ashton in the Guidance Department.  Just ask for the clipboard.

 

STUDENT VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES:

CYB OPENING DAY – Student help is needed on Saturday, March 8th at Pine Field in downtown Carlsbad on CYB opening day.  Help is needed from 9:00am – 3:00pm with three-hour shifts.  Volunteers will be running game booths and help with set up and clean up.  Students earn community service hours.  If you can help, contact Lisa Pahl at 760-519-7657.

POINSETTIA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL – Student help is needed at the Poinsettia Elementary School Spring Carnival on Saturday, March 29th from noon – 2:00pm.  Students earn community service hours.  If you can help, contact Nancy Halladay at nancyhalladay@sbcglobal.net.

 

PARENT VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY:

The Guidance Department is seeking parent help to stuff freshman registration packets on March 13th beginning at 7:30am in the Guidance Department.  If you can help, contact Mrs. Holbrook at 331-7118.  If packets are not finished on the 13th, help will also be needed on the 14th.

 

CALIFORNIA HIGH SCHOOL EXIT EXAM (CAHSEE):

On Tuesday, March 11th and Wednesday, March 12th, CHS will administer the CAHSEE to all 10th grade students along with any 11th and 12th grade students who still need to take this exam.  CHS will be on a special bell schedule for all students.  All 10th grade students will be notified of their testing locations in their English classes starting one week prior to the CAHSEE.  All testing students will need to report to their designated testing room at 7:30am.  They will need to bring their student ID card and a couple of #2 pencils.

CHS TALENT SHOW:

The annual CHS Talent Show will be held on Tuesday, March 11th in the Cultural Arts Center beginning at 7:00pm.  Cost for entrance is $2.  Acts featuring dancers, singers and other school performances will compete for cash prizes given to the top three students.  An additional feature will be the performance of the top three student singers selected in the Lancer Idol contest who will be competing for the top two spots to represent CHS at the first ever North County Conference Teen Idol Contest.  The North Country Conference Teen Idol contest will be held on Thursday, March 13th at 7:00pm in the Cultural Arts Center.  Cost for entrance is $3.  For more information, contact ASB Advisor Tom Robertson at trobertsasb@yahoo.com.

 

GRAD KNIGHT:

Students who are going to Disneyland for Grad Knight must fill out new forms if they have not already done so.  Forms can be obtained by going to www.carlsbadhigh.com or at the front desk in the front office of CHS.  Grad Knight is $85 from now until March 31st.  Prices will go up after this date.  It is important that students sign up ASAP to get a space on the bus.

 

There will be a Grad Knight Stussy sale on Saturday, April 5th.  Flyers will be available shortly.

 

CHSTV STUDENTS TO PRODUCE GROUNDBREAKING DOCUMENTARY ON THE HOLOCAUST

Fifteen broadcasting students will visit the Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site, near Munich, Germany in April to produce a groundbreaking documentary on the Holocaust.  This film may be a first of its kind because the lessons of the Holocaust will be told to students, by students about the horrors of the Holocaust.

CHS CAMPUS BEAUTIFICATION:

The CHS Campus Beautification Committee is asking for donations to purchase new lunch tables for the students.  CHS is receiving a new face lift but items such as lunch tables are not being replaced.  The committee is looking for individuals or groups to sponsor a table which cost approximately $800 each.  They will be in Lancer purple.  To honor your contribution, your name will be placed on a commemorative plaque.  This is a great way to help celebrate CHS’s 50th birthday.  For more information, contact Pam Turrell at 434-6680 or turrhome@sbcglobal.net.
